The Brooks Collection

Mrs. Lillian Kruger Brooks of Haddam Neck, Connecticut, working with town historian Amzi Clark (also of Haddam Neck), spent 40 years collecting materials and doing research on the Haddam Neck area of Connecticut for a book she wrote called Life Flows Along Like a River: a History of Haddam Neck, (published in 1972). This book tells the history and beginnings of Haddam Neck, using facts and stories of those who lived there.

Along with a copy of her completed book the Godfrey Memorial Library is fortunate to have been given the vast array of materials that Mrs. Brooks collected over the years. One part of the collection is made up of boxes of note cards with the transcriptions of headstones from cemeteries in Haddam, Higganum, East Haddam, Hadlyme, East Hampton, and Colchester.

This database is drawn from some of her notes. Many notes are written on scraps of paper, and all are written in pencil, so there are bound to be some errors in the transcriptions. The information in this database is drawn from a set of 3"x 5" index cards. Most of the cards are identified by the burial ground from which they were transcribed. However, the boxes of cards had been shifted about many times, so there may be cards that were placed incorrectly.
